curry capital of britain leisure getting into sports over the past year i’ve been looking into trying out a wide range of new sports, i’ve been pretty stuck with what to finally stick to however. i’ve always been into running, jogging and walking through the countryside – however, since i moved down to london from leicestershire’s gorgeous countryside, i’ve found it difficult to get that same country feeling whenever i’m out and about. as a result i’ve kind of narrowed down my list of potential options to a handful, firstly there’s the obvious option for me to get onto my bike and try cycling to some more scenic areas in london’s surrounding areas. my issue with cycling is that if i’m going to use that as my form of exercise then i’d need my bicycle to be portable, at least to a certain extent. i travel a fair bit and it would be nice to have some way to get around whenever i’m using a train or plane. the only viable option therefore would be some form of folding bike, these are a relatively new introduction to the cycling community and living in london i’m seeing more and more of these on a daily basis. i’d like a lightweight folding bike too – these are pretty hard to find unless you’ve got a big wallet, so i’ve got a bit of searching to do if i choose to go down this route. another option for me is to get a motorbike and then just travel to any particular activity that i choose to pursue. some other activities that i’ve been thinking about are rowing, quite a unique hobby. but i figured that this would definitely help to keep me fit, plus there’s a local rowing club situated fairly close to me as well. it’s also really cheap to get into, generally all you need is a gym membership and because of this i could possibly purchase a lightweight folding bike and also get into rowing too. this is something i’m certainly considering, the only thing that is really holding me back is the fact that i’ve never actually rowed before and i’d like to meet the people at the rowing club before diving in and buying a year long membership. the other few options i’ve listed down is swimming, gymnastics and a few recreational hobbies too – like golf. these are more for socialising than keeping fit, i realise i’m never going to become amazing at swimming as i’ve always been awful at it, regarding gymnastics and golf – i’ve never really considered these in the past, however as i grow older i’m getting more and more interested in trying new things out. hopefully one day i pluck up the courage to get out there and give them all a go, we will have to see if that consideration for the future. food my favourite restaurants being born and raised in leicester, i’ve experienced a wide range of different types of indian restaurants in my life – however i’m now fully aware of the fact that the majority of the top restaurants are located in london. fortunately i’m now based there so i can provide you all with a true top 3 list of all of my favourite eateries. now that we’ve officially left the cold winter period, we’re actually coming out of prime indian food time. despite this, i always manage to enjoy eating indian food all year long. number one on my top 3 list has to go to gymkhana , located in london – postcode w1. gymkhana has a particularly diverse array of different dishes on their menu, my favourites have to include the mintjac deer biryani – this is a very unique dish, all of the meat is freshly cooked and caught fairly locally too. while this isn’t traditionally indian meat, the style of cooking certainly is. gymkhana boasts some of london’s finest indian chefs too – they always present their food in a way that moistens the taste buds. number two goes to indian zing, another restaurant that is far and away from all of your standard restaurants. here you can expect to find a wide array of traditionally cooked dishes, gorgeous fresh breads and vegetables alike. i would personally recommend to go for one of indian zing’s mixed platter dishes so that you can try a bit of everything and get the thoroughly authentic experience. the restaurant is located in west london – postcode w6. number three was hard to pick, however i decided to go for masala zone – this place offers a gorgeous selection of indian street foods, my favourite from their extensive selection includes pao bhaji, golgappa and some of their freshly baked sundries too. why did i pick this restaurant for number 3? well, this place epitomises authentic indian cuisine and their service really is second to none. it was extremely difficult for me to whittle down all of the fantastic indian restaurants in london, however i feel like i’ve done the best job i possibly could. all in all, there is a long list of restaurants all across the uk that i’d love to recommend, but if you find yourself in london – you can’t go wrong with any of the ones listed above. each of them focuses on providing you with traditional foods that are fresh, excellent service and great ways of displaying their dishes too. the ultimate indian experience, you wont leave hungry, with an empty wallet or disappointed in any way. what i will say is that the majority of the top indian restaurants will be found in east and west london, i can’t really think of any stand out examples anywhere else – but please let me know if there are any that you feel like should belong on my top list. i’ll look at providing you all with a more detailed list of reviews in the future. food britain’s favourite curry? i’ve always had my personal favourite types of curry, and many people over the years have disagreed with me repeatedly. obviously i’ve become accustomed to a variety of different flavours and am therefore not the best test subject to be totally representable for the british population. as a result i’ve decided to take a deeper look into this and provide you guys with somewhat of a study on this subject. if i had to choose one style of curry to begin with – that i personally believe is the most popular amongst the public – i’d definitely have to go for either a chicken tikka masala or a chicken jalfrezi. neither of these dishes are ones that i regularly choose to eat when i’m at a traditional indian restaurant, however if i’m having a takeaway then i’m more than happy with either of these. i’m not too much of a curry snob, but i do prefer to enjoy traditional dishes cooked by real chef’s whenever i have the chance to do so. i did a little research on this topic and found a daily mail article that stated that – as i anticipated – the chicken tikka masala was indeed the most popular dish over the past 10 years, however more recently there has been a growing trend for the jalfrezi becoming a highly sought after dish. in 2015 we actually saw the jalfrezi as the most popular indian dish and indeed the most popular one overall too – including all different styles of cuisine. no longer do we see the hugely popular orange tinged curry dish dominating restaurants, we now see a growing trend for consumers to choose slightly more spicy dishes. widely regarded as a spicy dish, the jalfrezi is curated through the use of green chillies. on a survey of over 10 thousand different indian restaurants, over 62% reported that the jalfrezi was chosen most regularly. this included restaurants right across the uk, from the far south of england, right to the peak of scotland too. surprisingly, the tikka masala has since fallen to become only the 8th most popular dish in the country, quite a feat following its sheer dominance for over a decade. i’m sure we will see a resurgence in popularity in the future, however it does seem that the british public is broadening its curry tasting horizons. there is certainly a growing trend of people wanting to try out new flavours, particularly thai green curries too – i’ll cover this topic in future posts. i’m not entirely sure what the hype is all about with either of these dishes, as i stated previously, however it is nice to see further dishes being included in the top 10. i feel that it is a shame to limit our taste buds to one or two styles of curry, there are so many to pick britain welcome to my personal blog where i will be travelling the united kingdom and united states trying to determine which city in either country contains the best curry houses . this idea is in no way unique and i’m not claiming it for myself, however i would like to carry this trend on – hopefully inspiring a few people like myself to try out some of the more authentic dishes on offer. i can hear you wondering why i feel like i have what it takes to produce such a review? well, i was born in oadby, a small area within the lovely leicestershire countryside back in 1990 and have always loved trying out new authentic indian styled curries. over the years i assume that i’ve probably visited over 500 different restaurants and i’m not sure there are many people around that can say that they have such a level of exposure. i’ve never grown out of how much i love curry either, many people are very hit and miss – but growing up in a traditionally muslim family, i have eaten curry for the majority of my life. there is no point asking me to choose my favourite curry at the moment, as there are simply so many that i couldn’t do without – curries are wonderful dishes because they are truly varied and can be suitable for a wide range of occasions. if it’s a hot day, i generally wont want a hot dish, i’ll choose something much more mild – whereas if i am cold and need heating up, then nothing beats a spicy dish – for me at least. i’m not sure how regularly that i will be posting on my blog, however i initially intend on keeping you updated on the latest places i visit (towns, cities or countries) and of course all of the interesting restaurants and dishes i manage to try out while i’m there. please post any of your own personal recommendations, i’d love to try out new looking around for what type of hobby i’d be interested in getting into, i’ve decided to try the option of both cycling and rowing together. i want to go for a folding bike because i believe they offer the best flexibility for me and more specifically a folding mountain bike . i managed to find an awesome website that helps people choose their first foldable mountain bike and indeed the best folding bike for each individual person too – no matter their requirements. their folding bike reviews are pretty extensive and they cover almost every brand on the market too, it’s given me a real insight into what i’d like in a bicycle and all of the intricate benefits that all of them offer. right now i think the best brand, from what i’ve read so far, is dahon – they’re generally well made and are always reviewed very well too. it’s difficult to choose a bike solely on reviews that you read on the internet because there’s no scale to gauge any of the reported specifications on, however i think they do provide a good overview of what you’re likely to end up receiving. i think the best thing to do is read a variety of different reviews, from different authors and therefore you have the ability to compare differing opinions. i’ve done this and found that there are certain folding bike models that come up again and again. in terms of mountain bicycles, there are far less brands currently producing these types of models – however there’s a lot of bikes out there and plenty for you to choose from. anyway, i’m planning on getting out and about as much as possible now that the weather here in london is finally getting better – i’m going to be here posting pictures of the bike i purchase, all the journeys i make via strava, all the different places i visit – and of course all the different restaurants i manage to cycle to as well. i’m going to be signing up to the local rowing club as soon as my folding mountain bike arrives, i’m assuming i’ll have one here at my house at the end of this week and i’m intending on using it next weekend. fingers crossed that the weather holds up and we start to see some spring sunshine, who knows – i may even be fit, healthy and a seasoned bike rider by the time the summer arrives. i’m really excited about this year moving forward, i think it’s going to be a really good year for me – particularly now we’ve got the winter out of
